Overview

This online course covers the types of butterflies in Texas and how to attract them. Homeowners or garden enthusiasts will learn to invite new fluttery friends to the neighborhood.

Course Information

Learn how to create a butterfly garden you can enjoy for years! This course will teach you how to attract butterflies as well as identify the common types of butterflies in Texas. With an interactive garden and numerous videos, you will learn what types of plants will draw butterflies to your location.

Objectives:

  • Describe the biological characteristics of butterflies
  • Identify common species of butterflies found in Texas
  • Select and maintain plants that attract butterflies

Modules

Module 1: Butterfly Biology

Learn about insect characteristics, the butterfly lifecycle, defense mechanisms, and classifications of butterflies.

Module 2: Common Orders of Butterflies

In this module, you will learn about common butterflies such as Monarchs, Leafwings, Painted Ladies, and more! This module covers more than 30 different species found in Texas.

Module 3: Host Plants

Learn about attracting milkweed butterflies and swallowtails. Other topics covered in this section include best practices for creating a butterfly garden, plants that do well in Texas, and an interactive 'Explore a Garden' activity.
