Welcome to Enology Basics for Viticulturists and Enologists!

This online course is designed to provide a foundational understanding of winemaking for those interested in enology without requiring hands-on laboratory experience.

Throughout this course we'll be focusing on theoretical knowledge and virtual demonstrations on the following key topics:

  • Wine types,
  • Grape juice composition,
  • Chemical analysis methods,
  • Juice adjustments,
  • The basics of alcoholic fermentation, and
  • Laboratory setup.

Course Length

This course will take approximately 4 hours to complete. You can complete this course at your own pace. Your progress in the course will be saved if you exit AgriLife Learn. This course is self-paced. You may start it at any time, and you have two years from the start date to complete it.

Course Objectives

Once you finish this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the main wine types;
  2. Understand the composition of grape juice;
  3. Explain the importance of measuring sugar content in grape juice;
  4. Analyze acidity and nitrogen levels in grape juice; and
  5. Understand juice adjustments and their impact on winemaking
