Overview

Working in child care is both meaningful and challenging. In this course, you’ll learn the right way to handle breast milk, formula, and other foods to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. We’ll cover essential food safety practices to help you create a clean, safe environment for infants and young children.

Course Information

Children are considered a highly susceptible population, meaning they are at a greater risk for contracting a food-borne illness.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that every year, one-in-six Americans will get a food-borne illness.

This course will look at ways to handle breast milk, formula, and other foods to help prevent food-borne illness from occurring in a child care facility.

Other topics discussed include:

  • basic symptoms of food-borne illness
  • handling foods properly
  • cross contamination
  • personal hygiene
  • and product dates information.

Once you finish this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of breast milk to support infant development and maternal health.
  • Accurately follow guidelines for labeling, refrigeration, freezing, and thawing breast milk.
  • Implement steps to prevent contamination and ensure safe feeding practices.
  • Recognize applicable state regulations and describe ways to create a breastfeeding-friendly environment.

This course will provide one credit hour of training.
