Overview

In early childhood, a child's social emotional development and mental health are one and the same. That means the strategies early childhood educators use to cultivate positive social emotional development are, by definition, supportive of positive mental health outcomes. The purpose of this 2-hour course is to give early childhood professionals a review of key milestones and learning goals in the social emotional domain of development and a selection of practical strategies to help children achieve them.

Course Information

In early childhood, a child's social emotional development and mental health are one and the same. That means the strategies early childhood educators use to cultivate positive social emotional development are, by definition, supportive of positive mental health outcomes.

The purpose of this 2-hour course is to give early childhood professionals a review of key milestones and learning goals in the social emotional domain of development and a selection of practical strategies to help children achieve them.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of social emotional development in early childhood and its long-term impact on young children's overall well-being;
  • Identify and describe the key components of social emotional development for infants, toddlers, 3-year-olds, and prekindergarten-aged children;
  • Recognize signs of mental health concerns in young children; and
  • Describe steps to support the mental health of young children during their early childhood years.

The development of this online course was 100% funded by federal Child Care and Development Funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of an $8,000,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.
