Course Information
Dealing with challenging behavior is one of the most difficult aspects of working in early care and education.
This 2-hour training course is designed to help early childhood educators learn more about:
- Different kinds of challenging behavior;
- Reasons infants and toddlers might use challenging behavior;
- The role communication plays in challenging behavior;
- Strategies for preventing challenging behavior;
- Science-backed techniques that can help with managing and reducing challenging behavior among children with and without disabilities; and
- How to create and implement an effective behavior plan.
Additionally, this course will specifically address challenging behavior in infants and toddlers with special needs, and how caregivers can respond appropriately and effectively.
This training course was developed and produced by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System in cooperation with the Texas Health and Human Services, Child Care Licensing Division, and using funds provided by the Texas Workforce Commission.

Children do not develop in a vacuum, so their social emotional development and mental health outcomes depend in part on the protective factors available in the settings and systems where they live, learn, and grow.
The purpose of this 2-hour course is to highlight the roles of families and communities in supporting young children’s mental health and provide early childhood educators a variety of strategies to maximize the positive influence those systems can have on a child’s social emotional development.
