Taylor County (Texas) was established in 1858, and named for Alamo defenders Edward, James and George Taylor. Taylor County is the home of Dyess Air Force Base, major medical centers, the Abilene State Park, Buffalo Gap Historic Village, and multiple colleges/universities.
The county is located in West Central Texas and is part of the Rolling Plains. The size of the county is roughly 919 square miles, with agriculture being one of the primary industries. There are several school districts and various communities throughout the county. As of the latest 2025/2026 estimates, the population of Taylor County, Texas, is approximately 145,863 to 149,697.
We are located on the Taylor County Expo property. Our address is 1982 Lytle Way but maps don’t always pin us in the right area. It’s best to come through Gate 5 off of the 322 access road. Once through the gate, you will take an immediate right then pass through Gate E. You will see our office straight ahead.
Our normal office hours are Monday through Friday. 8 am until 5 pm. Closed for lunch between Noon and 1 pm.

Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources (Ag & NR) program provides local, research-based education and support to farmers, ranchers, landowners, and community members across our county. Our mission is to strengthen agriculture, promote sustainable land management, and conserve the natural resources that make Taylor County unique.
Through educational workshops, field demonstrations, producer meetings, and one-on-one consultations, our program helps address local needs.

The Taylor County Family & Community Health (FCH) program is part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and is dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities live healthier, safer, and more productive lives right here in the Big Country.
Through research-based education and hands-on activities, our local FCH program provides resources and learning opportunities in areas such as Nutrition & Wellness, Food Safety, Health & Safety, Financial Literacy & Life Skills &Community Outreach.

The Taylor County 4-H Program, part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, is where young people in our community learn, lead, and grow. Through hands-on experiences, 4-H helps youth develop life skills, build confidence, and discover their passions in areas such as agriculture, natural resources, science, healthy living, leadership, and community service.
In Taylor County, 4-H members can raise livestock, explore gardening, learn cooking and food safety, develop robotics and STEM skills, or take part in citizenship and leadership projects. No matter the interest, 4-H provides a place where kids can learn by doing, supported by caring adult mentors and a statewide network of resources.

The Big Country Master Gardener Association (BCMGA) is part of the Texas Master Gardener Program, a volunteer initiative of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Our mission is to share research-based horticultural knowledge with the community while promoting sustainable gardening and environmental stewardship.
BCMGA members are local volunteers who have completed specialized training through AgriLife Extension. In return, they give back by teaching gardening classes, supporting community and youth programs, maintaining demonstration gardens, and assisting homeowners and organizations with research-based solutions.
Together, we help make Taylor County a greener, healthier place to live by growing not only plants—but also knowledge, connections, and community.

The Big Country Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program, based in Taylor County, is part of a statewide network of trained volunteers dedicated to conserving and sharing the natural heritage of Texas. Our members receive hands-on training in wildlife, habitats, and natural resources, and then give back through service projects, citizen science, educational programs, and community outreach.
From leading local hikes and star parties to restoring native habitats and supporting conservation partners, our chapter helps connect people in the Big Country to the beauty and wonder of Texas’ outdoors.

Join us each month at Abilene State Park for a free star party. We are set up in the soccer field area in front of the swimming pool.
Join our Master Naturalist group at Lake Abilene on the First Saturday of each month for a 5 miles hike through the trails of Lake Abilene.
Join our Master Gardeners on the first Tuesday of each month and the second Friday each month for a gardening program at the public library.
Join our Master Gardeners for a free Saturday Seminar on the last Saturday of the month between March and August.
