Overview

This self-paced course provides a complete guide to center pivot irrigation systems and covers important details on their selection, operation, and management. All data and specifications are in both US customary units (or English unites) and metric units (or S.I. units), as is typical of center pivots outside of the United States. Test your knowledge of the material in each section through interactive quizzes.

This self-paced, online course is based on the popular publication called Center Pivot Irrigation - Dual Units Version: Metric (S.I.) and English (Imperial) Units, which is widely used by both irrigators and industry personnel to select and manage pivots. The course has 10 modules covering the following topics:

  • Design choices
  • Understanding the pivot printout
  • System capacity and mainline sizing
  • Pressure regulators
  • Water applicators (including close drop spacing)
  • Important options and considerations including flow meters, pressure gauges, outlet spacing, and end guns
  • Variable-rate irrigation, control panels, and communication technology
  • Pivot management: runoff and wheel rutting and irrigation scheduling
  • Chemigation

A Center Pivot Buyer's Checklist is included. Students who successfully complete the course by answering the questions in each module will receive a certificate of completion and 6 hours of continuing education credit awarded by the Texas A&M School of Irrigation, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
