Overview
At eight demonstration sites in Texas, the effect of applying dairy manure to pasture and cultivated land was studied in terms of water quality. The goal was to improve water quality by implementing best management practices, specifically proper application rates for composted dairy manure. As this publication reports, applying manure at the correct rate has little effect on E. coli concentration in runoff. Compost applied to cultivated sites did not affect phosphate concentrations in runoff and actually decreased concentrations of nitrate nitrogen. (4 pages)
