The collared peccary, commonly known as the javelina, is a native big game species found in Texas, parts of the southwestern United States, and Latin America. Although they are often mistaken for feral hogs, javelina are in a different scientific family and can easily be distinguished by their white collar of hair around their neck.
Javelinas are omnivores found within the semi-arid brushland and oak-juniper woodland areas of Texas. They live in groups called squadrons, breed year-round, and are well-adapted to their arid environments with specialized digestive and water conservation systems.
