Overview

Learn about one of Texas’ native big game species, the collared peccary, also known as the javelina. Often confused with feral hogs, javelinas have their own unique physical and behavioral traits that set them apart.

Publication Information

The collared peccary, commonly known as the javelina, is a native big game species found in Texas, parts of the southwestern United States, and Latin America. Although they are often mistaken for feral hogs, javelina are in a different scientific family and can easily be distinguished by their white collar of hair around their neck.

Javelinas are omnivores found within the semi-arid brushland and oak-juniper woodland areas of Texas. They live in groups called squadrons, breed year-round, and are well-adapted to their arid environments with specialized digestive and water conservation systems.
