Overview

Teachers encourage children to participate in experiences that actively engage them in communication, creativity, and problem solving. These core skills are critical in children's cognitive development. Strategies for effective verbal interactions, encouraging problem-solving, and integrating the creative arts are explored.

Course Information

Some of the most important skills early childhood teachers strive to cultivate in young children include communication, creativity, and problem solving. By carefully planning the experiences and materials available to children, teachers encourage children to practice these critical, cognitive skills.

This online course:

  • explores strategies for helping children engage in effective verbal interactions
  • suggests ways to encourage problem-solving through productive struggles
  • generates ideas for integrating the creative arts
  • explains how to bring all these elements together using project-based learning

Learn about research related to engineering design with preschoolers and ideas/activities to encourage and support children in becoming junior engineers. Students will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of various disciplinary styles and explore strategies for setting and enforcing healthy limits.
