Course Outline

Module 1: What is Positive Youth Development

Learn how to define positive youth development, identify youth, and recognize challenges and resources for youth.

Module 2: PYD in Context

Apply major youth development theories and models to your context, describe the 5 Cs model, and implement a positive culture through teaching and group learning strategies.

Module 3: Essential Elements of Youth Development

Consider how to implement the eight elements into programming efforts and design a setting that meets the youth's basic needs.

Module 4: Behavior Basics

Define behavior, distinguish between the functions of behavior, and practice effective reinforcement and punishment.

Module 5: Customer Service Excellence

Explain each component of the RATER scale and identify opportunities to improve customer service in your program.

Module 6: Theory of Structured Experience

Structure experience through engagement, immersion, and absorption, and employ best practices to maximize the impact of experiences.

Module 7: Youth-Adult Partnerships

List the components of high-quality youth development programs, explain the 4-H Thriving Model, leverage youth volunteers, and implement youth voice at a level appropriate for your program.

    After completing this 4-hour course, the learner will be able to describe how to create a literacy-rich environment and how this environment supports children’s growth and development, explain strategies to strengthen vocabulary development, and examine critical components for fostering children’s reading and writing development.
