Course Information
This three-and-a-half-hour online course covers the positive youth development (PYD) model. These interactive modules provide real-world applications of PYD theories for many youth-facing professionals.
Do you like working with youth? Do you want them to see them reach their full potential? Course Outline
Module 1: What is Positive Youth Development
Learn how to define positive youth development, identify youth, and recognize challenges and resources for youth.
Module 2: PYD in Context
Apply major youth development theories and models to your context, describe the 5 Cs model, and implement a positive culture through teaching and group learning strategies.
Module 3: Essential Elements of Youth Development
Consider how to implement the eight elements into programming efforts and design a setting that meets the youth's basic needs.
Module 4: Behavior Basics
Define behavior, distinguish between the functions of behavior, and practice effective reinforcement and punishment.
Module 5: Customer Service Excellence
Explain each component of the RATER scale and identify opportunities to improve customer service in your program.
Module 6: Theory of Structured Experience
Structure experience through engagement, immersion, and absorption, and employ best practices to maximize the impact of experiences.
Module 7: Youth-Adult Partnerships
List the components of high-quality youth development programs, explain the 4-H Thriving Model, leverage youth volunteers, and implement youth voice at a level appropriate for your program.

Science and young children are a great fit! How many times does a young child ask, “Why?” This natural curiosity is the precursor to all different types of inquiry and exploration. Although developmental domains are frequently discussed in isolation, that is not the way children learn. Development in one domain impacts the other domains. Children should be engaged in high-quality developmentally appropriate activities that teach multiple areas at one time.
After completing this 1-hour course, the learner will be able to describe how the integration of activities has a positive impact on children’s learning across the domains and create activities that address components in multiple domains. - Course
In an early childhood setting, children should be surrounded by print and, through interactions with the teachers, begin to attach meaning to that print. Their name is usually the most important word a child begins to recognize and try to write. Open this exciting world for your children as you interact with them with print.
After completing this 4-hour course, the learner will be able to describe how to create a literacy-rich environment and how this environment supports children’s growth and development, explain strategies to strengthen vocabulary development, and examine critical components for fostering children’s reading and writing development. - Course
Creating healthy habits is a critical element of quality early childhood programs. This course reviews practices that promote physical activity in young children. It is aligned with Texas Healthy Building Blocks recognition criteria and was developed with support from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
