Course Information
In an early childhood setting, children should be surrounded by print and, through interactions with the teachers, begin to attach meaning to that print. Their name is usually the most important word a child begins to recognize and try to write. Open this exciting world for your children as you interact with them with print.
After completing this 4-hour course, the learner will be able to describe how to create a literacy-rich environment and how this environment supports children's growth and development, explain strategies to strengthen vocabulary development, and examine critical components for fostering children's reading and writing development.
After completing this training, participants should be able to:
- Define literacy and its importance in life;
- Describe how to create a literacy-rich environment to support children's literacy growth and development;
- Examine four components for fostering children's reading development: read-aloud, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and print concepts;
- Describe how writing develops, including the stages of writing and conventions of print;
- Explain strategies during read-alouds to strengthen vocabulary development; and
- Explain how dual language learners are supported through early childhood education literacy research-based practices and why this support is essential.
The development of this online course was 100% funded by federal Child Care and Development Funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of an $8,000,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.
