Every family plays a critical role in a child's development and influences the work of an early childhood educator. Families, as a child's first teacher, are in a position to promote healthy development and provide a foundation for how children see the world. In Defining the Importance of Families, you will take an in-depth look at the meaning of family to a child and how collaboration strengthens your work as an educator. In this 4-hour course, we will describe the various types of family structures, discuss strategies to use for effective communication with families, and look at ways to create opportunities for collaboration.

Every family plays a critical role in a child's development and influences the work of an early childhood educator. Families, as a child's first teacher, are in a position to promote healthy development and provide a foundation for how children see the world. In Defining the Importance of Families, you will take an in-depth look at the meaning of family to a child and how collaboration strengthens your work as an educator.

In this 4-hour course, we will describe the various types of family structures, discuss strategies to use for effective communication with families, and look at ways to create opportunities for collaboration.

After completing this training, participants should be able to:

  • Define family and the role they play in the early childhood setting;
  • Identify various types of family structures;
  • Discuss the role of culture and its impact on families;
  • Adopt several strategies for effective communication;
  • Demonstrate a variety of ways to show appreciation for and communicate with all families; and
  • Explain the importance of creating collaborative family partnerships.

The development of this online course was 100% funded by federal Child Care and Development Funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of an $8,000,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.
