Course Information
Research indicates that the first three years of life are critical for physical, social-emotional, and intellectual development.
During this 2-hour online course, child care providers will learn about:
- developmental patterns in infancy and toddlerhood
- the three key domains of development
- practical strategies for encouraging optimal development
- and how to recognize signs of potential developmental delays in very young children.
This course was developed and produced by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System in cooperation with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Child Care Licensing Division, and using funds provided under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

In this course, you will learn about sensory processing in very young children. We define the senses, consider healthy sensory development and indicators of sensory integration difficulties, review activities that support sensory development, and outline strategies for helping children with sensory difficulties.

This course will help you learn how to create a safe sleep environment for infants, thus reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also called SIDS, and other sleep-related causes of death that affect infants.

Children with healthy self-esteem, compared to their peers with unhealthy self-esteem, tend to be happier, more confident in their abilities, and less afraid of failure. This course covers the concept of self-esteem, how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy self-esteem, and how to foster children’s self-esteem.

Knowing how children develop is essential in meeting each child’s needs. Recognize developmental differences and uniqueness among typically developing children, and ways to consider if a child’s development is atypical. Identify ways to partner with families. Examine the types of assessment tools to plan play experiences.

Promoting creativity in an early childhood setting is critical for the development of children’s brains. Environments, daily interactions, and experiences are all opportunities to promote creativity in young learners. Creativity can be expressed through the visual arts, music and movement, and dramatic arts.
After completing this 3-hour course, the learner will be able to describe the elements of creativity, explain how environments can encourage creativity, examine how the arts can support development across all domains in early childhood, and discuss the different categories of creative arts with connections to the four developmental domains.
