Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Passenger Safety and KidSafe Initiatives is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) funded project to deliver education on child passenger safety and safe driving practice statewide. The project offers education statewide to the public including training and interactive programs, car seat checkup events, as well as sponsors car seat fitting stations at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension offices, first responder offices, and other agencies. Audiences range from preschoolers to adults including law enforcement.

Programming includes demonstrations on the importance of wearing seat belts using the project’s Rollover Convincers. Programs are enhanced by technology including a Distracted Driving Simulator and Oculus Rift with custom-designed virtual reality software that demonstrates the dangers of distracted driving as well as speeding and following too closely.

Training includes the National Child Passenger Safety Technician Class and Operation Kids and Transporting Children Safely in Childcare. Online training is provided for childcare staff and certified technicians.

Partnerships include victim advocates, the Kailee Mills Foundation, and Allie’s Way, who are subcontractors with the grant. Kailee Mills Foundation tells the story of 16-year-old Kailee Mills who lost her life due to briefly removing her seatbelt while riding with friends. Allie’s Way is a victim impact story of the loss of a two-year-old child due to a distracted driver.

All programming is provided free of charge.
