Fisher County lies in the heart of Central West Texas within the region known as the Rolling Plains. Covering approximately 906 square miles, the county features wide-open rangeland, fertile croplands, and rugged prairie vistas that capture the spirit of rural Texas. Located about fifty miles southeast of the High Plains—or “Cap Rock”—Fisher County serves as a transitional landscape between the High Plains and the Texas Hill Country, offering both agricultural richness and natural beauty.

The county seat, Roby, along with the nearby town of Rotan, anchors a community deeply tied to farming, ranching, and heritage. Cotton, cattle, and small grains remain vital parts of the local economy, while conservation and innovation continue to guide agricultural practices for future generations. Beyond its economic value, Fisher County holds an enduring sense of history and character. From the first Spanish expeditions that crossed the area in 1541 to the pioneering families who settled here generations later, the county reflects a legacy of perseverance, independence, and stewardship of the land.

Today, Fisher County continues to balance its agricultural traditions with modern opportunities in education, youth leadership, and rural development—exemplifying the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s mission to improve lives, businesses, and communities across the Lone Star State.
