Course Information
Learn about the positive benefits of play. During play, children can escape the constraints of reality where the usual meanings of objects can be ignored and new meanings substituted. For example, a toy block can be a phone, a brush, or even a tasty sandwich.
Explore the definitions and theories important to the concept of play, appropriate play materials and how to support learning and play in early childhood classrooms. Also, develop age appropriate strategies to use to assist children with their play experiences.

Recognize developmental differences and uniqueness among typically developing children, and ways to consider if a child’s development is atypical. Identify ways to partner with families. Environments, daily interactions, and experiences are all opportunities to promote creativity in young learners. Creativity can be expressed through the visual arts, music and movement, and dramatic arts.
After completing this 3-hour course, the learner will be able to describe the elements of creativity, explain how environments can encourage creativity, examine how the arts can support development across all domains in early childhood, and discuss the different categories of creative arts with connections to the four developmental domains.
