Located in the heart of West Texas, Lubbock is the major retail and wholesale trade area for West Texas and eastern New Mexico. Lubbock is within 450 miles or the major metropolitan areas of Texas including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Laredo, El Paso, and Amarillo. Lubbock is near the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado. The city is also the home of the region’s major health care providers and higher education institutions, such as Covenant Health System, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, South Plains College and Wayland Baptist University. The city’s diversified business climate-agriculture, retail and wholesale trade, health care, education and distribution – indeed makes Lubbock an economic powerhouse. The area’s warm sunny days and mild seasons are conducive to the success of Lubbock’s agriculturally based economy. However, the Lubbock metro area has a robust diverse economy to complement its agrarian roots.
Lubbock’s economy remains stable due to strong distribution and wholesale and retail trade sectors. A principal location, excellent highway and interstate systems, and access to transportation – through the Lubbock International Airport, 25 trucking companies, and the Burlington-Northern and Santa Fe railroads – have helped Lubbock develop as a regional warehousing and distribution center.
The city is the major retail trade nucleus for more than 500,000 people across 26 counties. In addition, the city features a booming wholesale trade business consisting of 54 counties and more than 1 million people. In fact, the retail and wholesale trade sector represents 27.9 percent of the wage base.
