Tarrant County is an urban county with a population of 2,230,708 as of July 1, 2024. (U.S. Census Bureau). This includes two major Texas cities, Fort Worth with 1,001,741 residents and Arlington with 411,167 residents as well as 43 other municipalities (North Central Texas Council of Governments). Commercial Horticulture contributes to the local economy with a $127 million nursery and greenhouse plant production industry, $1.55 billion in retail sales, and a $676 million landscape maintenance and construction industry. 17,411 people are employed in these three segments. (Economic Contributions of the Green Industry to the Texas Economy, Palma and Hall, 2024.) Other horticultural crops grown in Tarrant County include vegetables, fruits, and specialty crops.
